Nelson Area Residents Challenge Gordon Cambell over Independent Power Projects

On April 18, 2008 over 200 citizens gathered around the Prestige Hotel in Nelson to voice concerns over the rush on BC's rivers by the application of so-called run of the river projects. Gordon Cambell, who was visiting local MP's from the Nelson area, was met with opposition by concerned kayakers, anglers, and river users alike. The purpose of the organized protest was to let Cambell know that there is local opposition to Independent Power Projects (IPP's) and to create awareness of the important issue that has not received adequate media coverage.
Kayakers were dressed in full gear with paddles in hand to show opposition to the over 550 water licenses plaguing our province. Other protesters dressed as fish and carried placards with slogans demanding public power instead of the current privatization trend. Kids and adults of all ages were in attendance to voice their concern to Gordon Cambell. Groups represented include; The ECE (Endangered Creeks Expedition), The Eco society, Friends of Koch Creek, members of the Nelson Canoe and Kayak Club, Borderline Boaters, and Columbia Canoe Club.
Organizers of the event claimed it as a success considering the number of protesters who showed up and the subsequent media coverage from CBC, Global TV and local media publications. Gordon Cambell never did come out to address the crowd despite demands from the group for his presence.

See you on the water,

Chris Ryman
