2008, A Brilliant Year.

I know, I know. All I seem to write about is the "Untamed Legend" (thx Carl) that is Brilliant Wave. Seeing as how it is go time for me right now, teaching back to back courses and river trips, I don't seem to have the time to be out in the woods scouting creeks and getting in to trouble like I would like to. Unless you want up to the minute reports on the level of the Slocan River, Brilliant is all I got.

After the construction on the Brilliant Dam the last few years many naysayers predicted the demise of our beloved play wave. Well, chalk one up for good ol' Mother Nature cause Brilliant is here to stay. I had the extreme pleasure of riding the giant last week and I plan to go out today with JD after a trip to the border where I hope to avoid the rubber glove, not from JD of course but our gracious border hosts. Anywho, back to the wave, it is big and juicy with great air potential on the surfers right shoulder and even looping ability in the center of the foam pile. The eddy access is perfect and there are no exploding waves below the feature. The sun shines on the wave after 9:30 am, and the water is warm so bring the shorty dry top.

me, waiting for the launch.
HOT TIP: To loop here, get bouncing, on the height of your bounce lean your head forward and press down on your heels until your boat is vertical, plunge into the water and wait until you are at the maximum height, then let er' go! Be patient for the maximum air!

See you on the river,

Chris Ryman

  1. That's sweet! Is it running all of the time now? What levels are best?

  2. It is running a lot these days but is mostly unpredictable. It seems the level is different almost every time you go but there is always something fun to do.
