Leap of Faith

With a huge, deep pool, soft landing and clean lead in, Leap of Faith is a strong candidate for my favorite waterfall ever. It's located on the Elk River just south of Fernie, BC, at the put in for the Upper Lower run. If the water is low enough there is also an excellent class 5 run above that can be combined with the Upper Lower for a great day of paddling. On Staurday May 10th, 2008, Kelsy Thompson, Scott Fiendel, Chris Mctaggart, Shon "Flex" Cottrill and I decided to start the western Canadian creeking season right. Medium-high flows were too high for the upper run so we put in just above Leap of Faith for the upper lower. The cold spring and late water meant most of us were taking our first strokes in a creek boat this season by sliding off the seal launch, sprinting away from the nasty pillow forming a recirculating eddy and off the 40 footer. Good lines were had by all and the rest of the run was big and fun. Another great day on the river. All photos courtesy Scott Feindel.
