Kayak Fishing, a blend of fitness and tranquility

Mist lifts off the still morning water. Your kayak slices through the lake, quiet, sleek, fast. Your lure trails behind you enticing the fish below. Welcome to the future of angling, no pollution, no machines or computers, just you and the fish. The old way becomes new.
Kayak fishing you say; sounds a little nutty. What better way to get into that sacred spot that is either too shallow for motorboats or too muddy for waders. Although it has not yet caught on in Canada, Kayak Fishing tournaments are popping up in every state across America. Big sponsors, big cash prizes and thousands of kayak anglers follow the tour around the country in hopes of bringing home the biggest fish.

In recent years the kayak industry has responded to the latest trends by introducing kayak fishing specific kayaks, life jackets, rod holders, tackle storage, and even paddles that have rulers and a notch in the blade to reach down and scoop a snagged lure. There are books and videos, magazines and online forums that offer a huge amount of information to fish through. Try an Internet search on “kayak fishing” and discover the growing popularity of the new sport.

My dad bruce, the trout slayer.

Anglers are discovering the benefits of kayak fishing at an alarming rate. You can troll with your rod placed in a kayak mounted rod holder. If casting is your style, either drift or anchor off to enjoy hours of reeling in the big ones. People are even discovering great methods of fly-fishing from a kayak while side straddling the boat.
The biggest advantage to kayak fishing is to return to nature and enjoy a smaller carbon footprint while you’re out trying to catch dinner. What better feeling than landing a meal sized fish to feed your family without harming the environment by the clunky old outboard that sputters for hours while you try to enjoy a tranquil day on the water? Kayak fishing is quiet, good for your health and the environment, and most importantly effective. Want to find out for yourself? Take a trip up the Slocan early in the morning, at the mouth of any creek you will find folks hauling in the big ones while sitting in a kayak.

Yumm!

See ya on the water,
